The local mining industry is stepping up to bolster disaster response efforts.

The Chamber of Mines of the Philippines (COMP) and the Department of National Defense’s Office of Civil Defense (OCD) have formalized a partnership to integrate mining companies into the country’s disaster risk reduction and management network.

This collaboration seeks to harness the mining sector’s capabilities to enhance the government’s response to natural calamities.

Through a memorandum of understanding signed by OCD administrator Ariel Nepomuceno and COMP chairman Michael Toledo, mining firms will now play a more active role in disaster response and recovery efforts.

Mining companies have a proven track record in disaster response, having participated in numerous relief and recovery operations across the country, including the Maco landslide, South Central Mindanao earthquakes, and Typhoon Yolanda.

COMP member companies and affiliated organizations have played a crucial role in major disaster response efforts, including search, rescue, and relief operations.

Their contributions were vital following events such as the Maco landslide in Davao de Oro, the South Central Mindanao earthquakes in October 2019, the 1990 Baguio earthquake, Typhoon Sendong in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, Typhoon Yolanda in Samar and Tacloban, and the 2017 Surigao earthquake.
