Clean and green: Philippines aims for golden age of mining
The Philippine mining industry hopes to usher in a “golden age” built on responsible practices and environmental cooperation, according to industry leaders and government officials.
Atty. Mike Toledo, chairman of the Chamber of Mines of the Philippines, highlighted discussions with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in preparation for the upcoming Mining Policy Summit.
These meetings with DENR leadership and Stratbase are crucial, Toledo said. “We envisage this to be a game changer for the industry.”
He envisions a future where responsible mining fuels economic growth and clean energy goals.
“This can be the golden age of mining,” he said.
The Philippines has vast reserves of minerals vital for electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy infrastructure.
Toledo expressed optimism about the current administration’s view of mining.
“We have an administration that recognizes mining as an indispensable industry as we transition away from fossil fuel in our fight against climate change. We have a Congress that embraces the same view,” Toledo said.
“We have a DENR Secretary [referring to Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga] who bases her policies and decisions on science and consults with all stakeholders,” he added.
