Bamboo Initiative

What a mining community can look like in 2039

Planting Bamboo Grows Social Enterprises and reinvents mining

Bamboo is the grass of hope. It promotes a bright future for mined-out areas as fast, safe, and effective means of revegetation and rehabilitation. In addition to mitigating the negative effects of climate change, bamboo is also a dynamic raw material with immense commercial potential, as it can be used to create high-value products such as motorcycles, bikes, and furniture, and simple everyday items such as tumblers, toothbrush, and utensils.

The Bamboo Initiative is a nationwide movement aimed at revegatating mined-out areas with fast-growing bamboo to increase bamboo production, creating lucrative, and sustainable enterprises for mining communities.

Using the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)’s Philippine Bamboo Roadmap, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the mining industry will:

  • Help boost the growth of bamboo industry
  • Increase the production of bamboo
  • Generate livelihood by training mining communities to manufacture high-value products

Though the Bamboo Initiative, Mining will be reinvented as a social enterprise and this will help change the conversation about Mining.
