Mining, quarry companies most labor-intensive sector in Davao Region

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / 31 May) – Companies engaged in the mining and quarrying activities are the most labor-intensive among other sectors in Davao region, according to the 2016 Annual Survey of Philippine Business and Industry Inc. (ASPBI) that was released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)-Davao on Friday.

“Mining and quarrying posted highest average number of workers per establishment, making this most labor-intensive sector,” she said.
She added that this average number of workers in the sector increased significantly by 41.34% compared to 595 average number of workers employed by mining companies in 2015.
Firms in the administrative and support services emerged as the second most labor-intensive sector with 422 workers per establishment in 2016, according to Magracia. The total employment generated by the 74 companies in this sector reached 31,297.
Also, she said that the PSA recorded 156 companies in the agriculture, forestry and fishing companies in the region. The sector, the third most labor-intensive in the region, generated a total employment of 186,610 in 2016 or an average of 249 per establishment.
The region recorded a total of 1,665 establishments with total employment of 20 and above in the formal sector of the economy in the region, Magracia said.
The companies registered a total income of P369.064 billion in 2016.
The top revenue generators were the firms in the wholesale and retail trade / repair of motor vehicles that generated a total income of P123.56 billion or 33.5% of the total income registered in 2016; manufacturing, the second highest revenue generator, with P98.6 billion; and agriculture, forestry, and fishing, P33.4 billion, at third.
The PSA also launched the 2018 Census of Philippine Business and Industry (CPBI) and Industry and 2018 Input-Output Survey of Philippine Business and Industry (IOSPBI).
Rosendo M. Aya-Ay, PSA-Davao officer-in-charge, said the CPBI aims to collect and generate information on the levels, structure, performance, and trends of economic activities of the formal sector of the economy for the year 2018.
“The data collected from the CPBI will constitute bases upon which the government and the private sector can formulate policies and evolve economic development plans,” he said.
Aya-Ay said the data in the CPBI would be used in the formulation and monitoring of policies and plans; measuring and comparing national, regional, and provincial economic growth; evaluating business options, assessing opportunities for new investments and estimating market shares; determining the performance and contribution of different industry sectors to the economy; and market research, industry studies, and other economic analysis.
He said under the 2018 IOPSBI, the agency will collect detailed information on revenue, expense, and inventories by product of businesses and industries in the Philippines, which will provide “comprehensive set of statistical information required in the compilation of the 2018 Input-Output Table of the Philippines, wherein it is used to analyze quantitatively the structure and independencies of producing and consuming sectors in the economy.”
