THE government is now eyeing more mining activities in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Surigao, and Davao to tap critical mineral deposits in the three areas.
This was contained in the new roadmap presented by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to President Marcos during a sectoral meeting in Malacañang.
The department noted that the country needs to fully harness its mining sector to utilize its abundant mineral deposits.
DENR’s comprehensive plan aims to revitalize the critical minerals industry with the government taking steps to boost mineral production by spearheading exploration initiatives.
It highlighted the potential of the Cordilleras, Surigao and Davao in terms of nickel, copper and gold deposits.
The government plans to make such high-potential areas available to the public by enhancing their infrastructures and utility support.
Also discussed in the plan is the streamlining of the permitting process and promotion of responsible mining practices as well as addressing political and legal obstacles.
In addition, it integrates government policies on inclusive growth, green job creation and ecological balance, and has provisions on recognizing geopolitical strategies in navigating global mineral trade.
