2022 Annual Survey (ASPBI) – Mining and Quarrying Section

Quarrying of stone, sand and clay industry group accounted for more than half of the total number of establishments
The 2022 Annual Survey of Philippine Business and Industry (ASPBI) preliminary results showed that a total of 303 establishments in the formal sector of the economy were engaged in mining and quarrying activities. This represents a 3.2 percent decrease from the 313 establishments recorded in 2021. (Tables A and 1)

Among industry groups, quarrying of stone, sand and clay posted the highest number of 208 establishments or 68.6 percent of the total number of establishments for the section in 2022. This was followed by the combined data of mining of iron ores and mining of non-ferrous metal ores with 66 establishments (21.8%), and the combined data of support activities for petroleum and gas extraction, and other mining and quarrying with 15 establishments (5.0%). Among regions, CALABARZON registered the highest number of 42 establishments or 13.9 percent of the total for the section. This was followed by Central Luzon and Ilocos Region both with 33 establishments (10.9%). (Table 3)

Mining of iron ores and non-ferrous metal ores industry groups employed the highest number of workers
The section employed a total of 36,575 workers in 2022, which indicates an increase of 4.3 percent from the 35,071 workers recorded in 2021. Of the total employment in 2022, 36,409 workers or 99.5 percent were paid employees, while the remaining were working owners and unpaid workers. (Tables A and 1)

Among industry groups, mining of iron ores and non-ferrous metal ores employed the highest number of 24,732 workers or 67.6 percent of the total workforce for the section. This was followed by quarrying of stone, sand and clay with 6,373 workers (17.4%) and mining of hard coal with 3,840 workers (10.5%). (Figure 2 and Table 1)

The top three regions accounted for 18,604 workers or 50.9 percent of the total employment for the section in 2022. These regions were Caraga with 9,718 workers (26.6%), Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) with 4,981 workers (13.6%), and Central Visayas with 3,905 workers (10.7%). (Table 3)

In 2022, the section recorded an average number of 121 workers per establishment. This represents an increase of 8.0 percent from the average number of 112 workers per establishment in 2021. (Tables A and 2)

By industry group, mining of hard coal registered the highest average employment of 640 workers per establishment. This was followed by mining of iron ores and non-ferrous metal ores with an average number of 375 workers per establishment. These industries surpassed the national average number of workers per establishment for the section in 2022. (Table 2)

By region, CAR registered the highest average employment of 623 workers per establishment, which is more than five times higher than the national average. The other five regions with higher average number of workers per establishment than the national average were:

1. Western Visayas with 388 workers per establishment;
2. Caraga with 313 workers per establishment;
3. Cagayan Valley with 267 workers per establishment;
4. MIMAROPA Region with 234 workers per establishment; and
5. Central Visayas with 139 workers per establishment. (Table 4)

Extraction of crude petroleum and natural gas industry groups paid the highest average annual compensation
The mining and quarrying section paid a total compensation of PhP 15.81 billion to its employees in 2022, which translates to an average annual compensation of PhP 434.22 thousand per paid employee. This was 13.5 percent higher than the PhP 382.64 thousand per paid employee recorded in 2021. (Tables A, 1, and 2)

Among industry groups, extraction of crude petroleum and natural gas paid the highest average annual compensation of PhP 813.90 thousand per paid employee in 2022. This was followed by mining of hard coal with an average annual compensation at PhP 644.96 thousand per paid employee and mining of iron and non-ferrous metal ores with an average annual compensation of PhP 460.22 thousand per paid employee, respectively. Across regions, six recorded higher average annual compensation per paid employee than the national average. This was led by Western Visayas with average annual pay of PhP 639.79 thousand per paid employee. The other regions were:

1. Caraga with PhP 567.91 thousand per paid employee;
2. Bicol Region with PhP 531.95 thousand per paid employee;
3. Cagayan Valley with PhP 456.81 thousand per paid employee;
4. MIMAROPA Region with PhP 440.13 thousand per paid employee; and
5. CAR with PhP 438.66 thousand per paid employee. (Table 4)

Mining of iron ores and non-ferrous metal ores industry groups contributed the highest share to the total revenue and total expense
In 2022, the total revenue generated by the section reached PhP 285.51 billion, which represents an increase of 23.8 percent from the PhP 230.59 billion reported revenue in 2021. Meanwhile, the total expense incurred by the section in 2022 amounted to PhP 177.50 billion, which indicates an increase of 12.6 percent from the PhP 157.58 billion total expense in 2021. By industry group, mining of iron ores and non-ferrous metal ores contributed the highest share to the total revenue and total expense, which amounted to PhP 168.86 billion (59.1%) and PhP 123.42 billion (69.5%), respectively. Completing the top three industry groups in terms of total revenue and total expense were as follows:

1. Mining of hard coal with a total revenue of PhP 70.60 billion (24.7%) and total expense of PhP 28.21 billion (15.9%); and
2. Extraction of crude petroleum and natural gas with a total revenue of PhP 29.13 billion (10.2%) and a total expense of PhP 10.22 billion (5.8%). (Figure 4 and Table 1)

At the regional level, the top three regions which had the highest share to the total revenue for this section in 2022 were the following:

1. Western Visayas contributed the highest share to the total revenue with PhP 70.71 billion (24.8%);
2. Caraga with total revenue of PhP 69.98 billion (25.4%); and
3. National Capital Region (NCR) with total revenue of PhP 41.35 billion (14.5%). (Table 3)

Moreover, in terms of expense, the top three regions which had the highest share to the total expense for this section in 2022 were the following:

1. Caraga contributed the highest share to the total expense of Php 49.67 billion (28.0%);
2. Western Visayas with total of expense of PhP 28.30 billion (15.9%); and
3. Central Visayas with total expense of PhP 21.95 billion (12.4%). (Table 3)

Mining of hard coal industry group posted the highest revenue per expense ratio
The revenue per expense ratio for the section was recorded at 1.61 in 2022, which reflects an increase of 10.3 percent from the recorded revenue per expense ratio of 1.46 in 2021. This indicates that for every peso spent in 2022, the section generated a corresponding revenue of PhP 1.61. (Tables A and 2)

By industry group, mining of hard coal recorded the highest revenue per expense ratio of 2.85. This was followed by extraction of crude petroleum and natural gas with revenue per peso expense ratio of 2.50 and the combined data of mining of iron ores and non-ferrous metal ores with revenue per peso expense ratio of 1.37. (Table 2)

Across regions, Western Visayas registered the highest revenue per expense ratio of 2.50. This was followed by NCR and MIMAROPA Region with revenue per expense ratio of 1.98 and 1.76, respectively. (Table 4)
